DNA analysis in your pocket !

Gone are the days,  doctors have to send a patient’s samples to laboratories for testing which can be time consuming, inconvenient and expensive. However, a new device has been developed which works in synergy with a smart phone and enables it to detect mutations in a cell’s DNA. This device might just help doctors avoid the entire process of sending samples to independent laboratories for testing. It will definitely speed up the diagnosis.  T he device was developed by a team of developers from UCLA, Uppsala University and Stockholm University and will cost around $500 per unit. In comparison, a high-end microscope used for the same job can cost as much as $50,000.

Doctor can dispense medicines to his/her own patients.

MCI's  ethics regulations 2002. 6.3  Running an open shop (Dispensing of Drugs and Appliances by Physicians) : -  A physician should not run an open shop for sale of medicine for dispensing prescriptions prescribed by doctors other than himself or for sale of medical or surgical appliances. It is not unethical for a physician to prescribe or supply drugs, remedies or appliances as long as there is no exploitation of the patient . Drugs prescribed by a physician or brought from the market for a patient should explicitly state the proprietary formulae as well as generic name of the drug.//.

Health Insurance Regulations 2016 –customer friendly !

Health Insurance Regulations 2016 –  3 changes you must know. IRDA announced Health Insurance Regulations 2016 on 12th July, 2016. There are few positives to insured individuals to look for. 1.  There are two types of health insurance policies. One is Indemnity Plans and another is Defined-Benefit Plans. from now onward life insurance companies not allowed to float any medical insurance products. But they can continue offering defined benefit health insurance plans. 2.  now onwards health insurance companies will offer credit linked group health insurance products. The term of such products will be maximum of 5 years. Earlier the maximum tenure of such products used to be 1 year. Now it is increased to 5 years. 3. instead of buying a new plan it is best to go for portability. The advantage of portability is that all the benefits of the existing policy like accumulated bonuses, pre-exiting conditions and waiting period are carried forward to the new policy. However, poli

Swasthya Slate: Health Tablet

Developed by  Kanav Kahol, who developed the device with the help of grants from Public Health Foundation of India and other such organizations. The kit consists of a digital thermometer, a BP monitor, an easy to use heart rate sensor, an ECG system, a blood sugar monitor, and a water quality unit. The whole system has to be connected with an interface that sends all the diagnostics to any android mobile device via Bluetooth stream or USB connection. A complete Swasthya Slate kit costs USD 800 (approximately Rs. 53,000) with the tablet. Now, at least five billion of us who lack access to quality diagnostics. We develop medical technology only for the top 1% and wait for the trickle-down effect to take place. This process should be reversed. So,what could be done? the answer is "swasthya tab"  medical device that can complete 33 common diagnostic tests in about 45 minutes. it is an instantaneous system. So it really helps in the sense that you don’t have to wait for da

Metformin still is the king!

American College of Physicians (ACP) recommendations. what outcomes one has to evaluate before prescribimg medication? Hemoglobin A1c, weight, systolic blood pressure, and heart rate; all-cause mortality, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular morbidity and mortality; retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy;  “Metformin , unless contraindicated, is an effective treatment strategy because it has better effectiveness, is associated with fewer adverse effects, and is cheaper than most other oral medications,” If a second oral medication is needed to improve high blood sugar, ACP recommends that physicians consider adding either a sulfonylurea, thiazolidinedione, SGLT-2 inhibitor, or DPP-4 inhibitor to metformin. Doctors may soon determine a person’s risk of 17 different and unrelated diseases -including Parkinson’s and various cancers – just by taking a quick read of their breath, thanks to a new low-cost and non-invasive device developed by researchers in Israel. As CPAP machine is cumbersome, sleep apnoea patients need cute simple tool. During sleep apnea, the muscles of the throat aren’t able to keep the airway open, causing breathing to start and stops repeatedly throughout the night. So the handheld device-Snoozeal' serves as a tongue “workout” that people use for 20 minutes a day, delivering mild electric pulses (called neuromodulation).

Mosquito bite is an accident !

Every dengue, malaria death now can have claim under accident policy . Death by mosquito bite an accident, insurer must pay up: National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC). Now NCDRC has held that   malaria death caused by  mosquito bite  is an accident, and directed the insurer to honor the claim. The commission also cited Black's Law dictionary that describes an accident as "an unanticipated and untoward event that causes harm". The national commission observed that the   insurance companies had included snake bites, dog bites and frost bites under the `accident' category. one should spread this message to all patients and also regarding " Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana" which    covers a ccidental death and disability cover of Rs 2 lakh at a premium of Rs 12 per year.   it reminds us  an old judgment ( Judgment-2012 :  National Consumer Disputes Redressal)  in a case of  Life Insurnace Corporation Of ... vs Shri Narender

Insurance issues:

All insurance companies must comply with the orders of Consumer Forums, Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal, and Awards of Insurance Ombudsman. For companies, life insurance is the most profitable, as they are collecting about 4lac crores as annual premium but settled one crore claims for just Rs. 15000crores.  The profit is mind boggling. But general and health insurance segment, where they  collect about 30000 crores as annual premium but they have paid almost 23000 crores towards claims. Thats why, the insurance companies are averse with health insurance policies. A.P. state is the first state in our country, that is going to implement universal health coverage irrespective of income.
