mRNA vaccines- A game changer in human history of war against pandemics!

If coronavirus was the biggest newsmaker, then science, and specifically mRNA technology, was its nemesis. That’s why mRNA is ThePrint’s newsmaker of the year. The first approved Covid-19 vaccines in the world with demonstrable efficacy, developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, are based on mRNA technology. mRNA or messenger RNA (ribonucleic acid) is simply a means for sending instructions to our body to produce proteins, and is being used in vaccines for the first tim...

Genomic medicine , otherwise called as Personalised Medicine? A challenge !

G enomic medicine   has acquired a prominent position within clinical medicine, making strong inroads into oncology (cancer), cardiology, neurology and other areas of medical science. It has played an instrumental role in the study of various infectious and rare diseases by providing new diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic options. the development of a malaria vaccine and   More recently, a genomic study developed a polygenic risk score for  coronary artery disease  based on ancestral genetic traits in Indians. Gene based therapies, help to personalise the medicine! Based on current trends in development, 30–60 gene therapies are likely to be added into clinical medicine by 2030. These therapies are projected to treat about 350,000 patients with lymphoma,  leukemia , and several con...

Doxycyclin is working in COVID

learning points: COVID-19 is a multiphasic disease starting with virus replicative phase lasting for 7-10 days, subsequently, in some patients, which is followed with hyper inflammatory phase and cytokine storm where most of the fatalities are likely to occur 4 . If the viral and hyper inflammatory phases of the disease were not addressed early and properly, the patient might progress to ARDS. which is more often life-threatening 5 . Hence, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory medications are necessary to stop the vicious progression of COVID-19 from mild-moderate to severe and to prevent the clinical deterioration in COVID-19 infected patients Doxycycline based combination treatment was used in this study have demonstrated dual - antiviral and immunomodulatory activities 6 . Also, noteworthy is that Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic which tackles secondary bacterial infections in COVID-19 patients . what is the regimen? Doxycycline 100mg PO every 12h per day...

New Hand-Held Breathalyser May Help Detect Diabetes And Cancer A handheld device that detects signs of diabetes and cancer in a person's BREATH in exhaled air. It analyses volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emanating from human exhaled breath that can provide deep insight into the status of various biochemical processes in the human body. VOCs can serve as potential biomarkers of physiological and pathophysiological conditions related to several diseases. The research has been published in the  journal Advanced Material. A prototype of the device, which will look similar to the technology cops use to detect alcohol in breath of drunk drivers, is being created. This highly-sensitive sensor has been created from a material called a 'nanoparticle scaffold' which is made of tiny pieces of metal and semiconductors and thousands of times smaller than a human hair. This media architecture consists of a stochastically ordered distribution of plasmonic nanocrystals in a fractal sca...
