Smart medical wearables have moved beyond simple fitness tracking toward continuous physiological monitoring, remote patient monitoring (RPM), early-warning systems and AI-assisted clinical decision support. The FDA’s current sensor-based digital-health-device list includes authorized wearable devices such as smartwatches, rings, patches and bands for continuous or spot monitoring. Important 2026 developments

⚠️ Important medical caution
A smartwatch is not automatically a medical device. Consumer wellness measurements should not be treated as diagnostic results without appropriate validation.
Most importantly, do not trust watches or rings claiming to measure blood glucose non-invasively. The FDA states that it has not authorized any smartwatch or smart ring that independently measures or estimates blood glucose without piercing the skin. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)
