Smart medical wearables have moved beyond simple fitness tracking toward continuous physiological monitoring, remote patient monitoring (RPM), early-warning systems and AI-assisted clinical decision support. The FDA’s current sensor-based digital-health-device list includes authorized wearable devices such as smartwatches, rings, patches and bands for continuous or spot monitoring. Important 2026 developments

  • CGM is becoming increasingly mainstream: the FDA cleared an OTC CGM for children aged ≥2 years who do not use insulin in June 2026. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)

⚠️ Important medical caution

A smartwatch is not automatically a medical device. Consumer wellness measurements should not be treated as diagnostic results without appropriate validation.

Most importantly, do not trust watches or rings claiming to measure blood glucose non-invasively. The FDA states that it has not authorized any smartwatch or smart ring that independently measures or estimates blood glucose without piercing the skin. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)

The biggest opportunity is Remote Patient Monitoring + Hospital-at-Home, particularly for:

For young doctors, the practical lesson is: learn to interpret wearable-generated longitudinal data, but never confuse a consumer gadget's reading with a clinically validated diagnosis.
