The history of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), its headquarters, and its vital role in healthcare are beautifully captured in this video.

Founded in 1928, the IMA is the world’s largest medical organisation with over 380,000 members. Plans are underway to build a new headquarters to provide modern facilities for the medical fraternity.

Highlights:

- The IMA has been working tirelessly to prioritise the nation’s health. It fights for the rights of doctors and patients and stands as one of the largest healthcare organisations in the world.

- The IMA headquarters moved to New Delhi in 1949. In 1958, the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, laid the foundation stone of IMA House.

- IMA House has witnessed numerous medical milestones. The footsteps of legendary doctors and groundbreaking innovations echo through its historic halls.

- The building regularly hosts medical lectures, scientific exhibitions, and inspires young doctors and healthcare professionals.

Founded in 1928 during India’s freedom struggle, the IMA has always focused on improving healthcare standards. The vision of its founding members continues to inspire generations.

The IMA is a founding member of the World Medical Association (since 1962) and actively collaborates with the World Health Organization.

Today, with over 380,000 members across India, the IMA plays a key role in shaping health policy, upholding medical ethics, and serving society — from disaster response (such as the 2001 Gujarat earthquake) to the fight against COVID-19, where over 1,600 doctors lost their lives.

The IMA is now embarking on a major renovation and modernization of its headquarters to meet contemporary needs, while preserving its glorious 65-year legacy.

This is not just a building — it is the “Second Home” for India’s doctors. A new, modern IMA House will empower the next generation to serve the nation with greater pride and efficiency.

To,

All the FOMA Members '

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings from Indian Medical Association !

As you know, IMA is the Association representing modern medical doctors in India, with its Headquarters located in New Delhi. IMA has 32 State Branches and more than 1800 Local Branches, actively working in different parts of India with more than four lakh members .

The IMA has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing the interests and welfare of modern medical professionals, while also making impactful contributions to the health and well-being of society as a whole. Its efforts in promoting ethical practices, supporting practitioners, and enhancing public health initiatives have earned it a respected and inuential position in the medical community.

This is to inform you that the foundation stone of historic and iconic building of IMA Headquarters in New th Delhi was laid on 19 September, 1958 by His Excellency, the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and the inauguration was honoured by the presence of His Excellency, the then President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, on 6th September 1964.

For over six decades, our Headquarters has stood as a symbol of unity, dedication, and service to the medical community. However, as per assessments by various structural engineers, the existing building—now over 65 years old—has reached the end of its structural life.

The leadership of IMA has therefore decided to redevelop the Headquarters building by demolishing the existing structure. IMA has strategically partnered with the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) India Limited for this initiative and the estimated cost of the redevelopment project is Rs.82 crores.

Indian Medical Association has worked extensively for the welfare of modern medicine doctors in India by advocating for their rights, improving working conditions, and supporting their professional growth . Let us join hands to build a lasting legacy of healing. We earnestly request you to kindly donate generously towards the construction of IMA New Building.

You are requested to circulate this information amongst your members and request them to contribute Rs.1000/- per member for the above cause. Contributions are eligible for income tax exemption under Section 80G. A copy of the IMA New Building Flyer is attached herewith for your ready reference.
