Aspirants who are preparing for NEET PG exam must be curious to know about the total number of NEET PG seats in India. While seeking admission in medical colleges for PG courses, candidates often want to know about the statewise list of NEET PG seats. This article aims to help them to provide detail about the total number of NEET PG seats in India.
As per the data, there are around 42, 182 PG medical seats in India. This includes seats for MD (Doctor of Medicine), MS (Master of Surgery) and Diploma course. NBE conducts NEET PG exam annually to fill these number of seats in medical colleges across the country. Candidates will find the statewise number of NEET PG seats in the article. But before that, let's understand about seat allocation process for NEET PG 2021. NEET PG 2022 exam will be held on May 21 in online mode.
NEET PG 2022 Latest Update
NEET PG 2022 exam was scheduled to be held on March 12 but it was postponed by 6-8 weeks. Centre decided to postpone the exam after students demanded so and moved to Supreme Court. They also urged the court to extend the cutoff date as many of the aspirants couldn't complete their internship due to COVId-19 crisis in the existing deadline. Finally, the government extended the cuttoff deadline to July 31.
NEET PG Seats Allocation Process
On the basis of the NEET PG result, NBE releases merit list for 50% All India Quota (AIQ) candidates. The merit list mentions the names of those candidates who are called for the NEET PG counselling round. Candidates get admission into MD/MS/DNB courses on the basis of counselling. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts the counselling for 50% AIQ, Deemed/Central Universities, ESIC/AFMS institutes while the respective state counselling authority holds the counselling session for the rest of the 50% seats.
To participate in the NEET PG counselling, candidates have to register on the official website of MCC, pay the registration fee, and fill the choice of course or colleges. Finally, MCC releases the result of NEET PG counselling 2021 in the form of a seat allotment list. NEET PG seats are allocated based on the options filled by the candidates and their All India Rank. A Total of four rounds of counseling, first, second, mop-up, and stray vacany round will be conducted by MCC for All India Quota seats.
Over the year an increase in NEET PG seats
The government has increased the number of PG seats over the years to strengthen the healthcare delivery system in India. In 2014, there were 23,000 PG seats in both the government and private medical colleges across the country, as per the data. In 2020-21, the total PG seats rose to around 44, 000 which includes 36,192 MD/MS seats and 8000 DNB/FNB seats.

Minister Pawar also informed the Parliament that the norms of establishing medical colleges in the country have been specified under the Establishment of Medical College Regulations, 1999.
"The National Medical Commission (NMC) has also framed Minimum Requirement Regulations, 2020 which provide for minimum standards viz. requirement of land, infrastructure, faculty, residents, equipments for the medical colleges. The applicant medical college must fulfil these requirements in order to obtain permission from the NMC as mandated under the NMC Act, 2019. The permission is granted only after physical verification of the infrastructure, human resources and other facilities," further mentioned the Minister adding that during the last academic session 2020-21, no medical college has been derecognized.

NEET PG 2019 Eligibility Criteria:
Indian Students:
Candidates pursuing MBBS Degree or having provisional MBBS Pass certificate from Institutions recognized by Indian Medical Council (MCI).
Must have a certificate of MBBS qualification issued by MCI or State Medical Council.
Completed one year of internships on or before 31st March 2019.
Foreign Medical Graduates:
Candidates who had pursued MBBS degree from colleges outside India must pass FMGE Screening test.
Completed their internships before 31st March 2019 are eligible for NEET PG 2019 exam.
Foreign Students:
Foreign Students can apply for NEET PG 2019 without MCI registration.
After payment of NEET PG application fees, MCI can allow Foreign Students to write NEET PG 2018 exams.
About National Board Of Examinations (NBE):
NBE was established in 1975 by Govt. of India with the objective of improving the quality of medical education in modern medicine.
It’s objective is to conduct Postgraduate medical examinations of a high standard on all India basis.
It conducts various exams on all India basis through Computer-based platform:
DNB CET for Postgraduate DNB courses
Diploma courses (DNB PD CET)
Super specialty (DNB CET SS) courses
FMGE Screening test for students pursuing MBBS degree outside India.
NEET-SS for admission to Super Speciality (DM/MCH) courses.
NEET MDS for PG Dental (MDS) admission in India.

50% All India Quota MD MS Seats:
All India students can apply for 50% AIQ quota MD MS seats.
Candidates who completed their MBBS from Jammu & Kashmir are not eligible for 50% All India quota seats.
Only those candidates who are nominated by Govt. of India to study MBBS in Jammu & Kashmir through central quota seats are eligible for 50% ALL India quota seats.
Those students must submit duly signed affidavit along with NEET PG application form to participate in All India 50% quota seats.
PG Medical Counseling 2019
Medical Counseling Commettee (MCC) conducts counseling for 50% All India quota seats, central govt., & deemed universities medical colleges.
You must apply for MCC and State Medical Counseling for MD MS admission through NEET-PG exam.

NEET PG Counseling for state quota seats:
State PG medical counseling is conducted for 50% of seats in Govt. colleges and all seats in Private Colleges.
The cost of State PG counseling registration fee is Rs 1000 – Rs 5000 for each states and union territories.
You must also fulfill the domicile eligibility criteria to apply for state quota seats PG medical counseling.
You can only apply for Govt. PG Medical seats in state counseling, if You’re a Domicile student of that state.
Non Domicile students are generally not allowed to participate in state quota counseling in most of the states of India.
But Karnataka & few other states allows non-domicile students to apply for state quota counseling.
In such cases. If you are non-domicile students can only apply for MD MS seats in private medical colleges.

Merit List Based on NEET PG results:
NEET PG rank card is declared on basis of Your overall position among all appearing students in NEET PG 2019.

For OBC, SC, ST category students, All India 50% quota category rank is valid for 50% state quota PG medical seats.
Medical authorities designated by State governments will conduct counseling for 50% state quota seats.
Also for Medical colleges established by trust, society, company or Minority Institutions in that state.
Counseling for Seats under Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) Institutions will be conducted by MCC & DGHS, New Delhi.
You must select AFMS Institution’s options while applying for NEET PG exams and should have the eligibility criteria as mentioned by MCI.
