Medical Education at a glance & MCI Recognized PG Courses.

  • As per LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 37 dated 23rd NOVEMBER, 2012 and ANSWER by THE MINISTER OF HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE (SHRI GHULAM NABI AZAD)-- 362 medical colleges in the country, out of which 168 are in Government sector and 194 in private sector. The intake capacity for MBBS course of these medical colleges is 45629 annually and 22503 for postgraduate courses.
  • in order to increase the number of MBBS and PG seats in the country, the Central Government has rationalized the Medical Council of India (MCI) Regulations in terms of land requirement, bed strength, bed occupancy, maximumadmission capacity, increase in age of teaching faculty, utilization of district hospitals for establishment of new medical colleges in the government sector and increase in teacher students ratio for PG courses. This has resulted in increase in 10262 undergraduate seats and 7585 PG seats during the last three years i.e. 2010-11 to 2012-13.
  • The 12th Plan envisages establishment of medical colleges by upgrading the district hospitals and increase in intake capacity of MBBS seats in the existing government medical colleges.
  • MCI Recognized PG Diploma Courses: The total number of seats available in the approved / recognized government and private colleges for eligible aspirants are 3923in 55 specialties.
  • The MCI Recognized PG Degree Courses has total 68 specializations available and the total number of seats are 17110. 
  • The MCI Recognized Super Speciality courses in the total number specializations are 34 and the total number of seats available are 1555.
  • MCI Recognized PhD Course In the PhD there is total of 41 specializations and the Ph.D has to be done in All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. 
  • MCI Recognized DNB courses.
  • MCI Recognized Other Courses:There are also some other courses which are MCI Recognized. These are total of 20 specializations. The present list of MCI shows the number of seats of 3 specializations only – There are 24 seats of Masters in Hospital Administration, 1 seat of M. Sc. in Medical Bacteriology, 6 seats of M. Sc. in Pathology. For the remaining details of seats please check up with Medical Council of India, New Delhi.
