Why its happening in medical education especially in private sector ?  Is it fueled by black money? Is it due to complacence on the part of govt? With agents and college managements colluding to sell many of the 30,000-plus MBBS and over 9,600 postgraduation seats in private medical colleges, back-of-the-envelope calculations by TOI suggests that about Rs 12,000 crore in hard cash changes hands in this black market every year. Of the 422 medical colleges in India, 224 are private, accounting for 53% of MBBS seats. Many of these colleges are running with little or no facilities, no patients and fake faculty. The goi

How to curtail down the usage of antibiotics?

Respiratory infection is one of the most common reasons people come to the doctor. But there's not an efficient or highly accurate way to determine whether the infection is bacterial or viral. If we have  a rapid blood test that could be used in clinics to distinguish bacterial and viral infections and to guide appropriate treatment,it will help a lot. More precise ways of distinguishing infections could not only reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics, but also lead to more precise treatments of viruses. This dream is going to be reality! Researchers at Duke University in US have developed 'gene signatures,' patterns that reflect which of a patient's genes are turned on or off, to indicate whether someone is fighting infection from a virus or bacteria. Results can be derived from a small sample of the patient's blood.
