Compulsory 1 year rural posting for MBBS doctors before  PG, from 2015-16


The  proposal  of  MCI   to  amend  the " Post  Graduate  Medical  Education  Regulations  2000"  to  make  one  year rural  posting  at  a  PHC (Primary  Health  Centre)  mandatory  for  a  MBBS  student  to  apply  for  admission  in  a  PG  medical  Course ---  has  been  approved  by  the  health  ministry  and  is  proposed  to  be  implemented  in  year  2015-2016. This  was  stated  in  Rajya  Sabha  by  Hon  Sh  Gulam  Nabi  Azad  on  17-12-2013. 

In the proposed one year MBBS graduates will have to work in primary health centres (PHC), taluk hospitals and district headquarters hospitals, each for a period of four months @ very meager pay..
With the one-year compulsory service MBBS will be extended to a six and half-year programme.
As per  Ministry  of  Health  and  Family  Welfare, there  are  31867  sanctioned  posts  of  MBBS  doctors  in  Primary  Health  Centers  all  over  the  country. Of  these  only 2489  posts  are  vacant.  but we all know, 45000  MBBS  doctors  pass  out  every  year.  so  where  are  they  to  be  employed ? 
Around  90000  MBBS  doctors  sat  for  NEET  PG  exam  in  2013. 
around one lakh doctors are waiting for PGs in the country for the annually available clinical  12000 PG seats.

  • DNB courses to be introduced from next year in district hospitals of West Bengal.
  • The National Board of Examinations (NBE) and Prometric India have announced the successful completion of All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE) for admission to MD/MS courses in 2014. A total of 72,197 candidates enrolled for the test at 71 centres in 38 cities. Bipin Batra, Executive Director, National Board of Examinations, said the test was conducted from November 25 to December 6 without any glitch and the results would be announced on schedule.National Board of Examination (NBE) is likely to declare the result of All Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE) for the year 2014 on January 31, 2014.
