REPORT OF MCI MEETING TO LAY DOWN GUIDELINES FOR ACCREDITATION OF CMEs HELD AT MCI DELHI 2ND FEB 2012

The State Councils are expected to draw up a list of accredited bodies which may apply for accreditation to provide CME programs.

1.     No CMEs may be considered for accreditation if organised by pharmaceutical companies, equipment manufacturers, private institutions, for promotional purposes or self advertisement.
2.      The BOG, MCI will specify that CME requirements which are mentioned in the code of ethics as being recommended will now be specified as being mandatory.
3.      The BOG clarified that whilst the MCI Act permits a registered practitioner to practice anywhere in India, this refers to suitability and eligibility. Whether or not he is permitted to practise will depend on registration with the State Council.
4.      No foreign medical graduate may undertake any work of any nature for financial gain in India. The work must be undertaken through charitable avenues.
5.      The GMC has been assigned the task of setting up a pilot project to assess the feasibility of setting up online systems for CMEs along the lines of the BMJ Updates.
1.      At least two CMEs per year should be on Ethics and National Health Policy.
2.      Doctors doing post-graduate courses will be exempt from CME requirements for the duration of the course.
3.      Medical teachers will not be exempted from CME requirements as teaching comprises their normal work commitments.
